It also sells eye care products and treatments for hepatitis C and digestive conditions. AbbVie reports as a single business segment. It makes money by selling its medicines. In the United States it sells mainly to three wholesale distributors, McKesson, Cardinal Health and Cencora. Some aesthetic products are sold directly to doctors and other licensed providers.
Biggest risks, in its own words
- Losing patent protection on major products, and the competition from generics and biosimilars that follows.
- Research and development that may not produce new products that can be sold successfully.
- Pricing pressure from governments, rebate programs, and pharmacy benefit managers that influence access to its drugs.
- Safety or effectiveness problems with its products, and product liability claims.
