What Albertsons does
Albertsons is a food and drug retailer. As of February 28, 2026, it ran 2,244 supermarkets in 35 states and the District of Columbia under 22 banners (store names), including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco and Shaw's, and had about 280,000 employees. Stores sell groceries, general merchandise, health and beauty items, pharmacy products, vaccines and fuel, in stores and online through delivery and curbside pickup. Albertsons makes money by selling these goods and services to shoppers. It reports one segment, because its geographic divisions have similar economics and sell the same general mix of products. It also sells its own store brands, such as Signature SELECT and O Organics, which had retail sales of $16.9 billion in fiscal 2025. Only 9.9% of those products were made in its own plants; the rest are bought from other makers. It calls competition in its industry intense.
Biggest risks, in its own words
- Intense competition in food and drug retail that could hurt its sales and profits.
- Labor disputes or work stoppages, since a significant majority of its employees are unionized.
- Failing to respond to changing shopper habits, including how people use digital and AI-driven tools.
- Changes in the healthcare industry and the risks of running pharmacies.
