What Home Depot does
Home Depot sells home improvement products, building materials, lawn and garden products, décor and maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) supplies, in stores and online. It also offers installation services and tool and equipment rental. At the end of fiscal 2025 it operated 2,359 stores in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam), Canada and Mexico. A typical store stocks approximately 30,000 to 40,000 items during the year, including its own brands such as Husky, Hampton Bay and Glacier Bay. Its customers are consumers, both do-it-yourself homeowners and homeowners who hire someone to do the work, and professionals such as contractors, remodelers, tradespeople and property managers. Online sales, from its websites and apps, were 15.9% of net sales in fiscal 2025. It reports the U.S., Canada and Mexico together as one segment. It also owns SRS, bought in fiscal 2024, which distributes roofing, landscape and pool supplies to specialty trade professionals.
Biggest risks, in its own words
- Weak or uncertain housing and home improvement markets that cut demand for its products and services.
- Strong competition in a fragmented industry that could lower its prices, demand and market share.
- Disruptions in its supply chain that affect the availability and delivery of its merchandise.
- Acquisitions and other strategic deals that may not bring the benefits it expects.
