What Intel does
Intel designs and makes processors, the main chips that run personal computers and the servers in data centers, along with AI chips, networking chips and custom chips. It sells mostly to computer makers, contract manufacturers that build computers for other brands, and cloud computing companies, which put its chips in products used by consumers, businesses and governments. It makes most of its own chips in its own factories. Revenue was $52.9 billion in 2025. Its products business, made up of chips for PCs (the Client Computing Group) and for data centers and AI, brought in $49.1 billion. Its third segment, Intel Foundry, develops manufacturing processes and makes chips; nearly all of its work is for Intel itself, but it is trying to win outside customers. Its three largest customers made up 43% of revenue. Intel names AMD as its main rival in PC and server chips, Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek in PC chips, Nvidia in AI chips, and TSMC and Samsung in chipmaking for others.
Biggest risks, in its own words
- Heavy, long-term spending on research and factories that may not pay off.
- It may pause or stop developing its next manufacturing process, Intel 14A, if it can't win a major outside customer.
- Risks tied to the US government's large ownership stake and its changed CHIPS Act grant agreement.
- Strong competition, and data center spending shifting to the AI chips its rivals sell.
