What CrowdStrike does

CrowdStrike, founded in 2011, sells cybersecurity software over the internet by subscription. Its Falcon platform uses one lightweight program, called a sensor, installed on customers' computers, servers and cloud systems. The sensor collects data that the platform uses to detect and stop attacks. CrowdStrike says the platform replaces older, separate security products. The company offers 33 cloud modules that customers can add to their subscription. They cover protecting laptops and servers, cloud workloads and employee identities, managing software vulnerabilities and IT operations, collecting and searching security logs, threat intelligence, data protection, and security for artificial intelligence systems. It also sells managed security services, in which its own staff watch for threats and respond for the customer. CrowdStrike recognizes revenue from subscriptions over the length of the subscription.

Biggest risks, in its own words

  • The July 19 Incident has affected, and is expected to keep affecting, its sales and its relationships with customers and partners.
  • Customers might not renew subscriptions or add more modules.
  • A history of losses, with no assurance of lasting profit.
  • Intense competition and pricing pressure.
