From its latest annual report

Moderna develops medicines and vaccines built on messenger RNA (mRNA), the molecule that carries instructions from genes to a cell's protein-making machinery. It has three commercial products: Spikevax and mNEXSPIKE, its COVID vaccines, and mRESVIA, a vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It launched mNEXSPIKE in the third quarter of 2025 and says it is now its top product in the U.S. retail channel.

Moderna earns its revenue from selling these vaccines. Total revenue in 2025 was $1.9 billion, largely from COVID vaccines. It also has experimental medicines in development for cancer, rare diseases and infectious diseases. With Merck, it is testing an individualized cancer therapy called intismeran in eight Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials. It has applications under review for a flu vaccine and a combined flu and COVID vaccine, and a norovirus vaccine in a Phase 3 study. In January 2026 it agreed with Recordati to carry a rare disease therapy through the final stages of development and, if approved, sell it worldwide.

Moderna says it has built a global manufacturing network since 2022, including facilities in the UK, Canada and Australia. It says the vaccine and drug markets are intensely competitive.

  • Intense competition in vaccines and drugs, and commercial challenges it has already faced.
  • Delays or failures in clinical trials and in getting regulatory approvals for new products.
