ORCL Β· Application Software

From its latest annual report

Oracle sells software, cloud computing services and hardware that businesses, governments and schools use to run their operations. Its best-known products are its database software and Java, along with business applications for finance, human resources, supply chains and sales, plus NetSuite for smaller companies and Oracle Health for hospitals and doctors. Customers can rent these as cloud services, run them in their own data centers, or mix the two.

Oracle reports three businesses: cloud and software, hardware, and services. Cloud and software is the largest. It covers cloud subscriptions, software licenses and the support contracts that nearly all license buyers add. Cloud revenue made up 51% of Oracle's total revenue in fiscal 2026, and its cloud infrastructure arm, which rents out computing power, storage and networking, including for training AI models, brought in 53% of cloud revenue. Oracle names Adobe, Alphabet, Amazon, Cisco, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Salesforce, SAP and Workday among its competitors.

Oracle spent $10.3 billion on research and development in fiscal 2026. It sells directly through its own sales force and through partners. At the end of May 2026 it had about 141,000 full-time employees, roughly 49,000 of them in the United States.

  • Oracle grew sales faster than 4 of its 4 similar companies. Its P/E is higher than 1 of 3.

Biggest risks, in its own words

  • Failing to secure enough data center capacity at affordable rates, or misjudging how much capacity it will need.
  • Not carrying out its cloud strategy successfully, which could cut its revenue and profits.
  • Its AI products not working as expected, hurting its reputation and results.
  • Intense competition from some of the largest technology companies, and new rivals that keep emerging.
  • Risks tied to the money it has borrowed and may borrow in the future.

If you put in $1,000 today: $1,647

At 20x, earnings only need to grow 0.5% a year for the share to be worth today’s price in 5 years. Faster, you gain; slower, you lose.

These are examples, not forecasts: nobody knows which will happen. Price in 5 years = earnings per share then Γ— the P/E then. Dividends are not included.

In plain words: In the long run a share tends to follow two things: how much the company earns per share, and how many times those earnings the market is willing to pay (the P/E). Move those two levers and you see what the share could be worth. Different guesses give very different answers.
