ExxonMobil explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas. It also makes, trades, transports and sells crude oil, natural gas, petroleum products, petrochemicals and specialty products. ExxonMobil reports four segments. Upstream explores for and produces oil and gas. Energy Products, Chemical Products and Specialty Products, together called Product Solutions, make and sell petroleum products and petrochemicals. Its Low Carbon Solutions business sits in Corporate and Financing until it has a material level of assets and revenue. Its earnings can be significantly affected by oil, gas and petrochemical prices and by refining margins. ExxonMobil says its industries are highly competitive, and that it competes with state-owned companies as well as private firms.

The company was incorporated in New Jersey in 1882. It had 58 thousand regular employees at the end of 2025; over 59 percent of its global employees are from outside the U.S. It held over 8 thousand active patents at the end of 2025. Its acquisition of Pioneer closed on May 3, 2024. ExxonMobil says record production in the Permian and Guyana raised its Upstream earnings in 2025.

  • ExxonMobil grew sales faster than 1 of its 1 similar companies. Its P/E is higher than 1 of 1.

Biggest risks, in its own words

  • Swings in oil, gas and petrochemical prices and in refining margins, since these are commodity businesses.
  • Government actions such as limits on access to resources, sanctions, new taxes, price controls or seizure of assets.
  • Government efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon taxes and mandates for electric vehicles.
  • Keeping up its oil and gas output depends on finding new resources and developing them on time and on budget.
  • Its reliance on large, complex, long-term projects that need joint venture partners, governments and suppliers.
