ExxonMobil reports stronger third-quarter earnings as cash flow and planned buybacks rise
ExxonMobil reported $15.4 billion of third-quarter earnings, $17.5 billion adjusted earnings and $19.1 billion of free cash flow, while announcing $20 billion of planned 2027 share repurchases.
ExxonMobil reported third-quarter 2026 earnings of $15.4 billion on 30 October, with adjusted earnings of $17.5 billion and operating cash flow of $25.7 billion. The company said production growth, refining performance and cost savings supported results as energy markets remained volatile.
Earnings and cash generation
Reported earnings rose from $14.5 billion in the second quarter to $15.4 billion. Adjusted earnings increased to $17.5 billion, or $4.23 per diluted share, from $14.7 billion, or $3.52 per share, in the prior quarter. ExxonMobil reported $19.1 billion of free cash flow and $9.4 billion of shareholder distributions, including dividends and repurchases.
Segment performance
Energy Products was the largest sequential contributor, with GAAP earnings of $7.2 billion versus $5.5 billion in the second quarter. Upstream earnings were $7.1 billion, down from $7.9 billion as lower prices and a Guyana entitlement effect offset production and project contributions. Chemical Products earnings fell to $735 million from $1.1 billion, while Specialty Products earnings rose to $1.3 billion.
ExxonMobil said year-to-date upstream production reached milestones of one billion barrels at Guyana and Kearl, while PNG LNG reached 100 million tonnes. It also highlighted record year-to-date refining utilization excluding Middle East impacts and higher diesel output.
What to watch
- Oil and refining margins, which can change upstream and Energy Products earnings quickly.
- Execution of the Papua LNG and Mozambique LNG portfolio changes announced with the results.
- Whether structural cost savings and production growth persist as prices and margins move.
- Balance-sheet and capital-allocation choices alongside the planned 2027 repurchases.
