What Citigroup does
Citigroup, known as Citi, is a bank holding company that serves consumers, companies, governments and institutions in nearly 160 countries and jurisdictions. It offers consumer banking and credit cards, corporate and investment banking, securities trading, help with cash management and trade, and wealth management. Citigroup revenues were $85.2 billion in 2025, and its average deposits were about $1.4 trillion.
Citi reports five segments. Services handles payments, cash management and trade finance for large companies and institutions, and holds and services securities for investors. Markets buys and sells stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities for clients. Banking covers investment banking, such as raising money and advising on mergers, and corporate lending. Wealth serves rich and well-off clients in about 20 countries. U.S. Personal Banking runs Citi's own credit cards, cards made with partners such as Costco, American Airlines and The Home Depot, and branches in six U.S. metro areas. Citi says it competes with many financial and advisory firms and some non-financial companies.
At the end of 2025 Citi had about 226,000 full-time employees in over 90 countries, about 31% of them in the U.S. It is simplifying the company and leaving some markets: in December 2025 it sold 25% of Banamex, its Mexican banking unit, and it still plans to sell Banamex shares to the public.
